Rasul Lurião, a farmer from Ruti in Cabo Delgado Province, Mozambique, stands today as a powerful example of perseverance, vision, and community impact. His agricultural journey demonstrates what is possible when individual resilience is matched with structured technical, economic, and social support.
Significant Local Challenges
Life in Ruti is marked by persistent adversity. Water scarcity forces entire families to travel long distances, limiting agricultural productivity and affecting basic hygiene. The lack of electricity is another daily constraint, hindering lighting and the efficient operation of Rasul’s farm.
In addition, unpredictable climate conditions—such as erratic rainfall—directly impact crop yields and the financial stability of farming households. In this context, the structural vulnerability of smallholder farmers becomes evident.
Meet Rasul Lurião
Born in 1974, Rasul began working in the fields as a child, helping his parents. At the age of 20, he established his first farm and has since expanded it to 35 hectares, cultivating cotton, maize, and soybeans. His determination to improve his family’s living conditions and contribute to his community has made him a local leader.
Beyond his own farming activities, Rasul employs seasonal workers, promoting fair labor practices and supporting the food security of other families. As he explains:
“I have children who are studying. That’s why I need this support—school materials, books, and even recreational activities. The income I earn from my work helps me support them.”
Impact of JFS-RESET in Cabo Delgado
JFS-RESET’s intervention has been instrumental in transforming Rasul’s journey:
Agricultural mechanization: The provision of a tractor significantly increased efficiency in land cultivation.
Solar energy access: Although not subsidized, Rasul gained access to solar energy for lighting and household use, improving living conditions.
Guaranteed market access: Direct cotton sales to JFS-RESET ensure a stable income stream, enabling investment in infrastructure and food security.
Storage and housing improvements: With increased income, Rasul enhanced storage capacity and improved housing conditions for his family.
Key Outcomes in Rasul’s Life
Improved agricultural productivity: Access to mechanization reduced physical effort and expanded cultivated land.
Stable household income: Cotton revenues support children’s education and family needs.
Community strengthening: Rasul has become a local role model and fair employer, promoting social cohesion.
Improved living conditions: Solar energy has brought greater comfort, autonomy, and safety to his household.
Rasul Lurião’s story shows how integrated solutions—combining technology, energy access, market linkages, and training—can transform lives, regenerate communities, and create lasting, sustainable impact.
