Regeneration of Degraded Soils and Biodiversity: Concrete Action for a Sustainable Future


The challenge of soil degradation, coupled with climate change, deforestation, and unsustainable land use, represents a direct threat to food security and rural development in Mozambique. JFS-RESET has responded to this challenge with practical and innovative actions, integrating ecological regeneration, agroforestry, and biodiversity conservation approaches in critical cotton-producing areas.


Within the framework of the international CA-RISMA (Climate Adaptation and Resilience) program, funded by international partners, JFS-RESET led concrete interventions in Mozambique, in conjunction with parallel initiatives in Zambia and Ivory Coast. The main objective of this project is to increase the resilience and productivity of smallholder farmers by improving soil health and rehabilitating degraded agricultural areas through regenerative and inclusive methods.


The actions include:


  • The completion of 111 soil analyses allows for the evaluation of nutrient status, compaction, and soil structure, enabling the adaptation of technical recommendations and rehabilitation plans based on this data.

  • Implementing trials with cover crops, including the use of legumes, improves fertility, reduces erosion, and promotes natural nitrogen fixation.

  • The introduction of agroforestry systems, with over 1,100 trained farmers, combines agricultural crops with selected forest species, promoting biodiversity and increasing climate resilience.

  • The development of an organic cotton production model, with 77 integrated farmers, which demonstrates lower production costs and greater independence from synthetic pesticides.

  • The involvement of renowned experts, such as agronomist Ernst Götsch, a pioneer in syntropic agriculture, who has been actively collaborating with the JFS-RESET technical team since 2021, helping to design cultivation systems that are more harmonious with natural cycles.



The impact of these interventions is visible not only in the improvement of the agricultural environment, but also in the appreciation of local knowledge, the strengthening of community cohesion, and the creation of new economic opportunities. The systematic collection of data, combined with dialogue with farmers, ensures that the practices adopted respond to the realities of the field and can be replicated in other regions of the country.


Additionally, JFS-RESET has initiated comparative studies between conventional and regenerative practices to scientifically validate their effects on productivity, soil health, and economic profitability. This scientific approach, combined with field experience, positions the organization as one of the leaders in regenerative agricultural innovation in Mozambique and the African region.


RESET is committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study is linked to several SDGs. The SDGs, also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
